EDEET Half Wood Hanging Lamp via Screed
Pendant light fixtures have been growing in popularity as of late and a wide variety of styles are entering the lighting market. With all that going on, home and cafe owners are starting to incorporate more pendant lighting into the design for their space. We’re not talking about one statement pendant light in the foyer, oh no, we’re talking about pendant lights EVERYWHERE! ‘What? Everywhere? Isn’t that sort of an overkill?’ Well, look at it this way: You can have baked potatoes for breakfast, fries for lunch, chips for dinner and it you still wouldn’t get enough of potatoes! Mash potatoes for supper? If we try out different heights and placements for pendant lighting, we are pretty sure your guests won’t notice it.
ONE :: Living Room
We’re jumping starting this list in the living room as the pendant light fixture is no stranger here. If fact, this is where most homeowners feel confident that they can install a pendant light fixture here and not have their room look ugly. Too soon? The pendant light works so well here is because the living room is likely the largest area in the house and the one with the most low-lying furniture. It is a place where people lounge around and chit chat so there tends to be a void between the furniture and the ceiling. Pendant lights are amazing at breaking the void without being too deliberate about it.
Another key point about placing pendant lighting in the living room is the height of the ceiling. Sounds familiar? That’s because we have an article on how you can incorporate statement lighting into spaces with low ceilings. Returning to the point on the void, positioning your pendant lighting here is a matter of height: Shorten your pendant light fixture for low ceilings and lengthen it for higher ceilings.

TWO :: Dining Area
This point here is applicable to cafe owners interested in installing pendant lights! Woohoo! Some homeowners and designers arrange ornaments such as flowers and candles on their dining table so it wouldn’t be bare when there isn’t a meal going on. This factor contributes greatly to the suitability of the pendant light fixture. Apart from the idea of the void, there is also the concept of clutter: How do you know when there is too much going on? It might come instinctively to some but can be harder for others. Here are some rules to follow.
Where do you want the focus to be? Should it be on the ornaments on the table (if any) or should the light fixture act as the centrepiece? Or, what is the purpose of the light fixture? Is it there to illuminate the dining area or for decoration? These are the key questions to consider before going into the frequency and design of the pendant lights. If the focus is on the ornaments and the lights serve the primary purpose of lighting up the area, we suggest going for a few simple and solid coloured light fixtures. The height of the pendant light is important as well. While we shouldn’t have them cluster too closely, we also shouldn’t position them too far apart as it will make the gap between the ornaments and lights starker. Otherwise, one statement pendant light will definitely inject a BANG into your dining area. Like many of our articles have point out, it is a lot about creating balance in your environment.

THREE :: Kitchen
The kitchen is another common hang out for the pendant light and we commonly see them hanging in triplets above the island counter. Indeed, that is a dreamy sight to behold and it does take your kitchen to the next level. However, something that most tend to miss out on is how the pendant lights act as a form of divider; separating the kitchen from the living area in the subtlest way.

However, knowing the demographic of our readership, we’d say the majority of you are looking into pendant light for a small, constrained kitchen. Fear not, the pendant light is not limited to the island counter. A neat way of incorporating pendant lighting into the kitchen is by hanging it above the kitchen sink like the example on the left or if you’re blessed with a high ceiling, you can position it in the middle of the kitchen. For most HDB kitchens, most of the shelving units and the cooking appliances are situated at one side of the kitchen, use pendant lights to balance the space by adding it to the opposite side.
FOUR :: Bedroom
The master bedroom is another place you’d find pendant lights, but just not as often. To add them into your design, you have to decide what you want them to be used for. Using them as bedside lights clears up the space a bedside lamp would’ve taken up, hence giving us more space to display your pretty scented candles or stack a few books. These pendant lamps will have to be long enough to reach your shoulder level when seated on the bed so it’ll provide you with sufficient lighting. Also, these light fixtures should have a clean and simple design to avoid adding clutter to the bedside area.
Here’s where the drama starts: The children’s room. If you want to add pendant lighting here, there are some serious considerations you have to take. For instance, the height of the light fixture. For safety purposes, the pendant light cannot be too low – or within the children’s reach – as kids, we’d probably channel our inner Tarzan and attempt to swing on the light fixture! Now, we wouldn’t want that, would we? Additionally, we cannot forget how children have a tendency to throw things around so it would be advisable to get a pendant light fixture that has a minimalist, simple design to avoid getting toys caught on it.
FIVE :: Bathroom
The bathroom is a rare place to find pendant lighting, especially in HDB apartments – we wonder why! With the right placement and style, we can integrate the pendant light fixture to any bathroom no matter the size and form! Sounds familiar? That’s because we have an article on lighting tips for enclosed bathrooms. Haven’t caught it yet? That means you haven’t LIKED us on FaceBook to receive updates on our latest articles. SIX :: Study Room
This is where lights are of the utmost practical use! We Asians know how important it is to cash in on those working and studying hours at home so it is extremely important that we have the optimal environment. Having a well lit study room does wonders for your working and studying experience and a clinical must for the sake of your eyesight!
Most people don’t view pendant lights as a candidate for the study room as they are more decorative than function pieces. But a light is still a light and therefore is just as great as other lights. Just like the point on bedside pendant lights, they have to be minimal and of an appropriate height to shed enough light. Avoid positioning the pendant light directly above the table as it will cast a dark shadow on the user’s work from the blocking of light.
SEVEN :: Outdoors
A growing number of apartments are sporting a sweet little balcony where they place their outdoor plants or stash their yoga mats for morning sun salutations. Whatever the purpose, incorporating pendant lighting to your balcony adds an unexpected twist to your space. Patios are the perfect location for outdoor dining and having barbeques. Adding a pendant light fixture into the mix can help create a relaxed atmosphere in the patio. This sets the scene for an evening of fun, laughter, and good food. It also injects some form of design and sophistication to an otherwise plain and open patio space. Pendant lights are the way to go for those who want to keep a space simple but not come off as lazy or undone.
EIGHT :: Stairs
Finally, pendant light fixtures will be a great addition to the stairs. They are classic additions to the spiral staircase or for stairs with air wells as they pull the different floors together. We have a whole article on staircase lighting including a point on pendant lights. Do check it out, it has a bunch of pretty good designs.
